The Agricultural Society of Fischer’s Store formed in 1875, intended as a cooperative and a social organization. Otto Fischer donated land to the society in 1897, where they built a dance hall and a nine-pin bowling alley. Fischer Hall was built with a vaulted ceiling that didn’t need support posts, to maximize the open space for dancing. Pine boards were soaked in water until they were pliable, and then bent into arches that would support the metal roof. There are several old dance halls in this part of Texas that were built with similar construction. Today, Fischer Hall is a popular venue for dances, weddings and reunions.
Fischer Bowling Alley The Fischer Bowling Club was built in 1897 as an open-air, single-lane nine-pin alley. This German style of bowling is a team sport, where pins are set in a diamond pattern. Players try to knock down the eight outer pins, but leave the center one standing. Pins are set by hand, usually by club members’ children. Over the years, it expanded to become a modern four-lane, indoor alley. Now it frequently hosts competitions, bringing other leagues from nearby communities to try their skills against the Fischer team.
Fischer School In 1886, Otto Fischer donated 30 acres of land to the Fischer Store community for the education of their children. Fischer Store School was built, with the majority of the land being used as pasture for horses the children rode to school. The original wood-frame building burned down in 1940 and was replaced with the current one, using the same foundation and rock steps. All one-room schools in Comal County were closed in 1957. The building became a community center in 1982.
Fischer Cemetery The community cemetery began on the highest elevation of the 30 acres Otto Fischer donated. Since it was located on school land, it was called the Fischer’s School Graveyard at Fischer’s Store. Later, it was changed to Fischer Cemetery. In the early years of the cemetery, the community members informally took care of maintenance and upkeep as the need arose. Then, in 1976, the Fischer Cemetery Association was formally organized. Official records of transactions and officers have been kept since then. The cemetery was laid out with 1170 burial plots. The association completed the Historic Texas Cemetery (HTC) designation on Fischer Cemetery in 2009, and a historic marker was added in 2014. .
